Malaysia Hits 4,100 EV Charging Stations—Yet Lags Behind 2025 Target

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8, 2025 — Malaysia now boasts at least 4,100 electric vehicle (EV) charging points nationwide, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, announced during the opening of the International Conference on Chemical and Energy Engineering (ICChEE 2025). This milestone reflects growing traction in Malaysia’s EV ecosystem.

These infrastructure gains form a central plank of Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which outlines six strategic pillars—including green mobility, aimed at achieving net zero emissions by 2050, while boosting renewable energy and efficiency standards.

Far from the Finish Line

Despite this progress, the country remains short of its 2025 ambition: a network of 10,000 EV charging stations across peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. As of October 2024, only 3,354 stations were operational—comprising 956 fast DC chargers and 2,398 AC units, covering just 33.5% of the target.

Charging Coverage Still Sparse

Malaysia’s vehicle-to-charger ratio currently stands at 13 EVs per public charger, marking an 18% increase from 11 EVs per charger just one year earlier. This trend highlights persistent infrastructure pressure amid rising EV adoption.

Strategic Push and Future Steps

Malaysia is advancing infrastructure rollout alongside policy levers like public fleet electrification, local EV manufacturing, and greener supply chain development. This effort is complemented by other green initiatives including carbon capture, energy efficiency upgrades, and a push into hydrogen as a clean fuel alternative.

Looking ahead, authorities reaffirmed the 10,000-station target remains valid—though industry observers anticipate the full goal may only be realized in 2026, particularly for DC fast chargers which have shown faster deployment momentum.
