New Delhi, 27 July 2026 – India’s growing use of artificial intelligence-powered surveillance is facing a significant legal test after activists challenged the monitoring of participants at a major youth-led protest over examination irregularities.

A petition filed in the Delhi High Court alleges that police used mobile surveillance vehicles, telescopic cameras and facial-recognition technology to continuously monitor demonstrators at Jantar Mantar, a designated protest site in the capital.
