Brussels, Belgium, 28 July 2026 – Google faces a widening legal challenge in Europe after a US$1 billion penalty under the European Union’s Digital Markets Act strengthened the position of rivals seeking compensation for alleged anti-competitive conduct.
The penalty, the first imposed on the company under the bloc’s newer digital competition framework, centred on claims that Google favoured its own services and restricted app developers from directing users towards cheaper payment options outside Google Play. Lawyers and litigation financiers now expect the finding to support additional private claims that could seek as much as US$10 billion.
