The Hong Kong Observatory announced it will hoist the No. 1 typhoon warning signal at 10.20pm on Saturday, with the possibility of higher alerts on Sunday as the city braces for occasional squally showers and thunderstorms.
According to the forecaster, a low-pressure system over the central and northern South China Sea has developed into a tropical depression.
“Under the combined influence of the tropical depression and a high-pressure ridge over southeastern China, local winds will strengthen tomorrow,” a spokesman said.
The Observatory added that the warning signal could be upgraded on Sunday morning.
Rainbands linked to the low-pressure system have already affected Guangdong’s coastal areas. As the system tracks north, it is expected to bring intermittent squally showers and thunderstorms to Hong Kong.
Heavy showers with squalls are forecast for Monday and Tuesday. Residents are advised to take precautions against rough seas and check road conditions before travelling.
