Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 28 July 2026 – Bangladesh has asked Malaysia to help secure liquefied natural gas supplies as a domestic gas shortage disrupts industry and power generation. The request, raised during talks between the two prime ministers, highlights the growing importance of energy diplomacy as South Asian importers compete for flexible cargoes.
Bangladesh relies increasingly on imported LNG because domestic gas production has declined. Imported supply now accounts for roughly 35% to 40% of daily availability, exposing the economy to shipping disruptions, spot-market prices and foreign-exchange pressure. Recent supply constraints have widened the gap between demand and delivered volumes.
