China Rejects Overcapacity Claims as New Tariff Risk Builds

Beijing, China, 28 July 2026 – China has rejected accusations that its industrial expansion represents harmful excess capacity as the United States prepares findings from a trade investigation that could lead to additional tariffs. The dispute places manufacturing policy, export growth and global supply-chain investment at the centre of another potential escalation in economic tensions.

China’s commerce authorities argued that production capacity should not be judged simply by whether it exceeds domestic demand. Their position paper said manufacturing strength reflects innovation, market competition, integrated supply chains and continued reform, while rejecting the idea that the country deliberately sought a large trade surplus.
