Malaysia Says It Is Not Selling Oil to ASEAN as Domestic Imports Remain High

Kuala Lumpur, 7 May 2026 – Malaysia is not selling oil to other ASEAN member states as the country still imports about 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day to meet domestic requirements, Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said, as regional governments review energy security arrangements amid heightened global supply risks.

The clarification comes as ASEAN countries discuss ways to strengthen energy resilience, including the possibility of broader oil stockpiling cooperation. Malaysia remains an oil-producing country, but domestic consumption exceeds local production, requiring continued imports to support transport, industry, aviation and refining needs.
