Washington, 26 April 2026 – US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were rushed out of the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner after an armed attack at a security checkpoint disrupted one of Washington’s most prominent political and media gatherings.
The incident took place at the Washington Hilton, where the annual black-tie dinner had brought together senior administration officials, journalists, lawmakers and public figures. Reuters reported that Trump and members of his administration were believed to be likely targets, according to US Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Trump, Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and senior officials were later confirmed safe.
The suspect was arrested after the security breach, and federal charges were expected to follow. Blanche said the suspect would face charges including assault of a federal officer, discharging a firearm and attempting to kill a federal officer. Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a California resident in his early 30s, while investigators continued examining his background and possible motive.
