Sweden Advances Green Steel Ambitions as LKAB Wins Approval for Fossil-Free Iron Plant

STOCKHOLM, 15 June 2026 — Sweden’s push to decarbonise steel production took a significant step forward after state-owned mining group LKAB received environmental approval to build a fossil-free sponge iron plant at its Malmberget operations in Gallivare.

The approval was granted by Sweden’s Land and Environment Court in Umea, clearing a major regulatory hurdle for the next phase of the country’s flagship green steel initiative, Hybrit.
