Britain Moves to Ban Social Media for Under-16s in Landmark Child Safety Crackdown

LONDON, 15 June 2026 — Britain is set to introduce one of the world’s toughest restrictions on children’s access to social media, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer announcing plans to ban social media platforms for users under the age of 16 and impose additional controls on gaming and livestreaming services.

The proposed measures would place the United Kingdom at the forefront of global efforts to regulate children’s online activity, going further than Australia’s existing social media restrictions by extending controls to gaming platforms that allow communication between strangers.
