Seoul, 28 July 2026 – South Korean equities suffered a sharp retreat on Tuesday as heavy selling in semiconductor leaders Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix dragged the benchmark KOSPI into one of its steepest declines of the year.
The KOSPI closed 500.47 points, or 7.41%, lower at 6,253.81, reflecting a rapid reassessment of technology valuations after renewed concerns emerged over artificial intelligence investment, semiconductor demand and growing competition from China. The technology-heavy Kosdaq also came under heavy pressure as risk aversion spread across the market.
