Proton’s First EV Factory in Malaysia Highlights Deepening Ties with China, Says Prime Minister

Tanjung Malim, September 4, 2025 — Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the launch of Malaysia’s first Proton electric vehicle (EV) factory as a powerful symbol of the country’s deepening strategic cooperation with China, particularly through the national automaker’s partnership with Geely.

Speaking at the opening of the Tanjung Malim facility on Thursday, Anwar praised the collaboration as extending beyond investment. He emphasised that it embodies a broader commitment to technology transfer and local capacity building, allowing Malaysia to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of advancing future-facing automotive innovations.

“We’ve seen China’s commitment—demonstrated through meetings with President Xi and Premier Li—through tangible technology transfer and space for our local professionals,” he said.

The EV factory aligns with several pillars of Malaysia’s national strategy, including its energy transition, New Industrial Master Plan 2030, and National Automotive Policy, all designed to drive high-technology mastery and climate action.

“This plant not only delivers cleaner transportation but advances our industrial roadmap… and automotive policy goals,” Anwar added.

He also extended his appreciation to the Proton workforce, applauding their dedication and discipline in making this historic project possible. Anwar revealed his hope that Proton EVs could roll off the line in time for the 47th ASEAN Summit, held in October, to showcase to more than 20 visiting heads of state.
