Malaysia Reaffirms International Cooperation to Track Down Jho Low Amid Ongoing Investigations

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8, 2025 — Malaysia’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) announced today that it continues to collaborate closely with international law enforcement agencies to locate and extradite fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, popularly known as Jho Low, in connection with the 1MDB scandal.

In a statement released via the Home Ministry, the CCID clarified that Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has confirmed that there is no substantive evidence linking Jho Low to China, nor any credible proof he holds or is using a forged passport in Shanghai. This directly challenges recent media reports suggesting otherwise.

Despite conflicting allegations—such as claims that he is residing in an exclusive area of Shanghai under a fake Australian identity—the authorities reiterated that these remain unsubstantiated whispers. “There is no verified evidence linking him to a fake passport or presence in Shanghai,” said the CCID in a firm rebuttal.

The government reiterated its resolve to pursue Jho Low through ongoing international cooperation, including through Interpol and partner jurisdictions, in a coordinated effort to bring him back to face justice.

Context & Continuing Efforts

Jho Low remains a central figure in the multi-billion-dollar 1MDB scandal, accused by US prosecutors of orchestrating one of the largest financial frauds in modern history. An Interpol Red Notice has been active since 2016, requesting his arrest.

Despite occasional reports placing him in China or using a forged passport, Malaysian officials have consistently denied possessing credible information about his current whereabouts or identity. The ongoing strategy reflects efforts to rely strictly on verified intelligence and formal legal frameworks rather than media speculation.
