Malaysia’s External Position to Stay Resilient Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty

Kuala Lumpur, 15 May 2026 – Malaysia’s external position is expected to remain resilient in 2026 despite heightened geopolitical uncertainty, supported by steady domestic demand, continued export expansion and the country’s diversified economic base.

Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said Malaysia, as a small and open economy, will inevitably face direct and indirect spillover effects from the ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East. These include higher energy prices, supply-chain disruptions and greater global uncertainty, all of which could weigh on the external economic environment.
