Beijing, 15 May 2026 – Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly warned US President Donald Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could create “clashes and even conflicts,” placing the island at the centre of a high-stakes Beijing summit already dominated by trade, artificial intelligence, rare earths and tariffs.
The warning reinforced Beijing’s long-standing position that Taiwan remains the most sensitive and important issue in US-China relations. While the summit was framed around economic stabilisation and market access, Xi’s message showed that strategic security concerns continue to sit above commercial negotiations.
