KUALA LUMPUR, 17 May 2026 – The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a global public health emergency, raising international concern over the spread of the Bundibugyo strain across parts of Central and East Africa.
The declaration, known formally as a public health emergency of international concern, signals that the outbreak may require stronger international coordination, faster resource mobilisation and tighter cross-border surveillance. Health authorities have stressed that the situation does not amount to a pandemic, but the combination of suspected deaths, confirmed infections and population movement has elevated the risk profile of the outbreak.
