Oakland, 16 May 2026 – A high-stakes courtroom battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI has exposed the personal, financial and philosophical tensions behind one of the world’s most influential artificial intelligence companies, as the dispute over OpenAI’s mission and commercial transformation moves into the hands of the jury.

The trial, heard in federal court in Oakland, centred on Musk’s allegations that OpenAI betrayed its original nonprofit mission by creating a for-profit structure and aligning closely with Microsoft. Musk accused OpenAI and its leadership of turning away from the founding vision of building artificial intelligence for broad public benefit, while OpenAI argued that commercialisation was necessary to fund costly advanced AI research.
