Petaling Jaya, 28 April 2026 – Malaysia’s medical and health insurance/takaful sector is facing renewed scrutiny after a World Bank report found that hospital supplies and services now account for the dominant share of inpatient medical insurance claim costs, raising concerns over affordability, billing transparency and the long-term sustainability of private healthcare coverage.
According to the report, hospital supplies and services, commonly referred to as HSS, accounted for 70% of total inpatient Medical and Health Insurance/Takaful claims costs in 2022, before rising to 72% in 2023 and 74% in 2024 across hospitals captured in the centralised MHIT database. HSS includes consumables, laboratory tests, diagnostic equipment, scanners and X-rays.
