MCMC Probing TikTok Claims on RON95 Subsidy, Liaisons with MPs to Clarify Context

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 September 2025 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) confirmed that it is actively liaising with Members of Parliament to investigate misleading content on TikTok relating to RON95 fuel subsidies. The probe seeks to unravel the full context behind videos featuring disputed claims—and clarify whether the information presented was factual or misleading.

This initiative comes as part of Operation Sky, an ongoing MCMC investigation addressing misinformation on public-interest platforms. The Commission says it is awaiting additional data from TikTok to complete its analysis. As reported earlier by Free Malaysia Today, authorities are still gathering evidence to fully substantiate the claims and properly assess intent and impact.

A notable instance under review involves a TikTok video linking a prominent MP to statements purportedly about targeted RON95 subsidies for foreigners. While the commission has approached the legislator for clarification, MCMC maintains that the process remains investigatory—with no determination of guilt at this stage.

An MCMC spokesperson emphasized the importance of restraint, urging the public and media not to jump to premature conclusions. “We must proceed with care,” the statement read, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to a fair and professional fact-finding process.

The Ledger Asia concerns

This case underscores the pivotal role of digital platforms in shaping political narratives—and the urgency of robust regulatory oversight. As ASEAN navigates rising digital misinformation, Malaysia’s measured response—seeking legislative inputs and verifying with platforms—is instructive for policymakers region-wide.
