Malaysian Cuisine Crowned ‘Most Delicious’ at Osaka World Expo 2025

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia has earned global recognition for its culinary excellence after being voted the “most delicious cuisine” at the Osaka World Expo 2025, a prestigious accolade awarded through a gourmet survey conducted by Japan’s Yomiuri TV.

Recognition from the World Stage

The award was determined through feedback from season pass holders, individuals who frequently attend the Expo and sample various international offerings. Their verdict placed Malaysia at the top of the list, ahead of Australia in second place, while Saudi Arabia, Germany, and France tied for third.

For Malaysia, this recognition goes beyond food—it represents a cultural victory and a soft power asset. With the Expo drawing millions of global visitors, the accolade firmly positions Malaysia as a country whose culinary diversity resonates on an international stage.

Minister Applauds Culinary Triumph

Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, celebrated the news in a statement shared on social media.

“We have always said Malaysian food is the most delicious, and this recognition proves that our cuisine and hospitality stand out in the eyes of the world,” he remarked.
“It is not just about taste—it reflects our cultural richness and the warmth of our people.”

The minister added that the recognition is a testament to Malaysia’s gastronomic heritage, forged through centuries of Malay, Chinese, Indian, indigenous, and colonial influences, creating a uniquely layered food identity.

Flying Roti Canai: Star of the Pavilion

At the Malaysia Pavilion, the “Flying Roti Canai” demonstration has emerged as the undisputed star attraction. Skilled chefs tossing and flipping the dough in mid-air have captivated visitors, turning a simple flatbread into a spectacle.

Served with chicken curry and dhal, the dish has drawn massive crowds, with reports of visitors waiting up to two hours in line just to savor the experience. Videos of the roti canai being theatrically prepared have gone viral on Japanese social media platforms, further amplifying Malaysia’s culinary presence at the Expo.

Other Malaysian dishes showcased include nasi lemak, satay, and teh tarik, each embodying Malaysia’s rich tapestry of flavors and culinary traditions.

A Boost for Cultural Diplomacy and Tourism

Food has long been one of Malaysia’s strongest cultural exports, and this recognition is expected to enhance the country’s culinary tourism appeal. Industry observers note that such international exposure could spur increased tourism interest, especially among Japanese and regional visitors seeking authentic Malaysian dining experiences.

“This win isn’t just about food—it’s about nation branding,” said a Kuala Lumpur–based cultural analyst. “By showcasing Malaysian cuisine to the world, the country is strengthening its identity and drawing global attention to its tourism and hospitality sector.”

Looking Ahead

The Osaka World Expo runs until October 2025, providing Malaysia with continued opportunities to showcase its food and cultural heritage to millions of visitors. With food diplomacy now firmly on the menu, Malaysia’s pavilion has secured not only an accolade but also a spotlight as one of the must-visit destinations of the Expo.
