Kuala Lumpur, 4 May 2026 – Malaysia’s relationship with the European Union is moving onto a stronger trajectory, driven by renewed free trade agreement negotiations, deeper economic engagement and growing recognition of Malaysia as a key strategic partner in Southeast Asia.
The EU has described Malaysia as an important partner, with bilateral ties gaining momentum as both sides work to advance negotiations for a comprehensive and modern free trade agreement. The negotiations were relaunched in January 2025 after earlier talks, which began in 2010, were put on hold in 2012. The first round under the revived process was scheduled to take place in late June 2025, reflecting a renewed push to upgrade trade and investment links.
