Japan’s Takaichi to Reset Indo-Pacific Vision in Vietnam as Regional Strategy Enters New Phase

Hanoi, 2 May 2026 – Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is preparing to outline a revamped Indo-Pacific vision in Vietnam, signalling Tokyo’s intent to deepen economic, security and strategic partnerships across Southeast Asia as regional competition intensifies.

The speech, scheduled during Takaichi’s visit to Vietnam, is expected to set out the evolution of Japan’s “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” policy, a framework originally associated with the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The policy has long emphasised rule of law, maritime stability, connectivity and open economic cooperation across the Indo-Pacific.
