BNM Expected to Keep OPR at 2.75% Through 2026 as Growth Support Takes Priority

Kuala Lumpur, 1 May 2026 – Bank Negara Malaysia is widely expected to keep the Overnight Policy Rate unchanged at 2.75 percent throughout 2026, as policymakers balance higher energy-related inflation risks against the need to support domestic growth and business confidence.

The rate outlook reflects the view that Malaysia’s inflation pressure remains largely cost-driven rather than demand-led. Kenanga Investment Bank said an OPR hike is unlikely for now, as external headwinds continue to weigh on growth conditions and Bank Negara Malaysia is expected to prioritise policy stability over pre-emptive monetary tightening.
