US Approves US$8.6 Billion in Middle East Defence Sales as Regional Tensions Stay Fragile

Washington, 2 May 2026 – The United States has approved more than US$8.6 billion in defence sales to key Middle East allies, underscoring Washington’s effort to reinforce regional security partnerships as tensions involving Iran continue to weigh on global markets, energy routes and investor sentiment.

The approvals cover Israel, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, with the packages focused mainly on air-defence support, guidance systems and battlefield command capabilities. The move was cleared through an expedited process, bypassing the usual congressional review period after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio cited an emergency linked to regional security conditions.
