MRCB Gears Up on RM1.58 Billion EPF Deal, Eyes High-Stake Data Centre Project

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 September 2025 — Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) shares surged this morning after the construction and property development heavyweight confirmed its acquisition of the Employees Provident Fund’s (EPF) 80% stake in Bukit Jalil Sentral Property Sdn Bhd (BJSP) for RM1.58 billion. The deal, executed through its indirect subsidiary Rukun Juang Sdn Bhd, signals a strategic pivot towards large-scale data centre development.

BJSP owns over 300,000 square meters of prime, 99-year leasehold land in Bukit Jalil—parcelled in three commercial plots with a combined net book value of RM1.49 billion, though July valuations placed market value at RM2.06 billion. The sale was struck on a “willing-buyer, willing-seller” basis, just 0.3% above KPMG’s adjusted net asset value of RM1.57 billion. MRCB may also need to assume RM69.2 million in shareholder advances previously extended to BJSP.

MRCB flagged in its Bursa filing that feasibility and environmental studies are underway to determine the project’s next steps, including plans to develop a data centre—a move that aligns with Malaysia’s emerging push into digital infrastructure.

By 10:45 am, MRCB’s stock climbed to 50.5 sen, up by 3.5 sen, with nearly 15 million shares changing hands—reflecting investor confidence in the high-stakes deal.

Save for its KL Sentral consortium legacy, MRCB is now positioning itself to ride Malaysia’s burgeoning digital infrastructure wave—driven in part by government-backed facilitation and strong demand for data centre capacity. The deal positions the company firmly at the intersection of real estate and tech infrastructure, with potential ripple effects across energy, construction, and digital connectivity sectors.

Yet market watchers caution that logistical hurdles, rising electricity tariffs, and viability of data centre development in Malaysia could pose risks. Still, with this acquisition, MRCB is signaling its intent to champion Malaysia’s tech-driven growth trajectory.
