UK Floats Goods-Only Single Market With EU as Brexit Trade Reset Faces Early Resistance

LONDON, 24 May 2026 – Britain has reportedly floated the idea of creating a goods-only single market with the European Union, in what would represent one of the most ambitious attempts yet to reduce post-Brexit trade friction between the UK and its largest regional trading partner.

The proposal is understood to form part of London’s wider effort to reset relations with Brussels ahead of a planned UK-EU summit in July. A goods-focused arrangement would aim to ease border checks, regulatory duplication and customs-related disruption that have affected businesses since Britain left the EU single market.
