KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade has launched an investigation into Jay Fai, Bangkok’s famed Michelin-starred street food restaurant, following allegations of overpricing a crabmeat omelette at 4,000 baht (US$110).
The probe was triggered after a London-based Thai YouTuber claimed she was billed 4,000 baht for the dish, despite the menu listing a price of 1,500 baht, according to the Bangkok Post.
Authorities said they are examining whether the restaurant’s pricing is justified based on ingredient costs. Under Thai law, overcharging carries penalties of up to seven years’ imprisonment, fines of up to 140,000 baht, or both.
During an inspection on Wednesday, officials fined Jay Fai 2,000 baht for failing to display the higher price on its menu. The eatery has also been ordered to submit a cost breakdown to support its pricing.
Jay Fai, helmed by 82-year-old Supinya “Jay Fai” Junsuta, rose to global fame after being awarded a Michelin star in 2017 and remains one of Bangkok’s most celebrated culinary institutions.
