South Korea Fines Coupang US$409 Million Over Massive Data Breach

Seoul, 11 June 2026 – South Korea has imposed a record fine of about US$409 million on e-commerce giant Coupang after a large-scale data breach exposed the personal information of tens of millions of users, marking one of the country’s most serious digital privacy enforcement actions.

The penalty, amounting to ₩624.6 billion, was issued after regulators concluded that Coupang failed to implement adequate cybersecurity controls to protect customer information. The breach affected approximately 33.7 million users, making it one of South Korea’s largest personal data incidents.
