Luxembourg, 12 May 2026 – Meta Platforms has lost a legal challenge against an Italian regulatory order requiring it to compensate publishers for using snippets of their news articles, in a ruling that strengthens the position of media companies seeking fair payment from major technology platforms.
The Court of Justice of the European Union sided with Italy’s communications regulator, AGCOM, in a dispute over whether online platforms should pay publishers when using extracts of press content. Meta had challenged AGCOM’s power to set compensation terms, arguing that Italy’s national measures were incompatible with publisher rights already granted under European Union copyright rules.
