Kuala Lumpur, 12 May 2026 – Malaysia is increasingly prioritising high-value and capital-intensive artificial intelligence data centre projects, as the country sharpens its strategy to attract larger digital infrastructure investments while managing power, water and sustainability constraints.
BMI, a unit of Fitch Solutions, said Malaysia’s policy direction reflects a deliberate move to focus on larger AI-related data centres that require deeper capital commitments and stronger infrastructure capabilities. The view was reinforced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s February 2026 policy position, under which proposals for non-AI-related data centres in Malaysia have been halted since 2024.
