Malaysia Weighs Further Fuel Subsidy Adjustments as Energy Costs Strain Public Finances

Kuala Lumpur, 12 May 2026 – Malaysia is considering further adjustments to its fuel subsidy framework as the government faces a sharp rise in energy-subsidy spending, even as the possibility of a general election this year adds political sensitivity to the reform agenda.

Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong said the government will continue with fuel subsidy reform despite election speculation, stressing that political factors should not determine the policy direction. He said authorities are considering whether to slightly reduce the quota of subsidised fuel for Malaysians to manage demand while ensuring that lower-income groups remain protected during the global energy crisis.
