Malaysia’s Semiconductor Sector Hits RM400 Billion, but Structural Gaps Remain

Kuala Lumpur, 5 May 2026 – Malaysia’s semiconductor sector recorded an estimated RM400 billion in revenue in 2025, underscoring its rise as one of the country’s most important industrial engines after more than five decades of participation in the global chip supply chain.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the milestone reflects the sector’s strength, but also stressed that Malaysia must address structural gaps if it wants to move beyond its traditional role in back-end semiconductor activities. The broader electrical and electronics sector now includes about 6,300 companies and employs more than 630,000 workers, making it a critical pillar of Malaysia’s manufacturing economy.
