Indonesia Intervenes as Rupiah Slides to New Record Low Against US Dollar

Jakarta, 5 May 2026 – Indonesia’s central bank intervened in the foreign-exchange market after the rupiah weakened to a fresh record low against the US dollar, as rising geopolitical risk, higher oil prices and broad dollar strength intensified pressure on Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

The rupiah fell to around 17,394 per US dollar on Monday, marking a new all-time low and extending its year-to-date depreciation to more than 4%. The currency had started the week near 17,329 per dollar before weakening further as regional markets reacted to renewed global risk aversion.
