Malaysia’s Fuel Supply Secure, but Rising Oil Prices Put Heavy Strain on Subsidy Bill

Putrajaya, 4 May 2026 – Malaysia’s oil and gas supply remains secure, but rising global fuel prices are placing growing pressure on government finances as the country continues to maintain the RON95 petrol price at RM1.99 per litre to protect households and businesses.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia has sufficient domestic fuel supply and continues to benefit from good relations with major producing countries, including Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. However, he cautioned that external disruptions, particularly conflicts in West Asia and risks along international trade routes, have pushed up shipping, insurance and fuel-related costs.
