Malaysian Food Startup Targets Commercialisation of Lab-Grown Unagi as Alternative Protein Race Deepens

KUALA LUMPUR, 23 May 2026 – Malaysia’s cultivated meat sector is gaining fresh attention as a local food technology startup works toward commercialising lab-grown unagi, positioning the country within Asia’s fast-developing alternative protein and food security landscape.

The product, developed by Penang-based Cell AgriTech Sdn Bhd, is cultivated from eel stem cells and designed to replicate unagi, the Japanese-style freshwater eel commonly served in sushi restaurants and grilled rice dishes. Earlier reports showed that the company had produced lab-grown unagi in Malaysia, marking a notable step for the country’s emerging cellular agriculture ecosystem.
