Malaysia-Norway Tensions Deepen After Scrapped Missile Deal

KUALA LUMPUR, 17 May 2026 – Malaysia’s defence procurement dispute with Norway has escalated after Oslo confirmed it had revoked export licences linked to a naval strike missile system originally intended for Malaysia’s long-delayed littoral combat ship programme.

Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was restricting sales of its most sensitive defence technologies to allies and closest partners, citing changes in the global and European security environment. The decision affected licences related to specific defence technology exports to Malaysia, intensifying a diplomatic row that has already drawn strong criticism from Putrajaya.
