NEW DELHI, 19 February 2026 – Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, one of the headline speakers scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, abruptly cancelled his participation on Thursday, just hours before he was set to take the stage at the high-profile global artificial intelligence forum.
The AI Impact Summit, held from 16–21 February 2026 and designed to position India as a leader in AI governance and innovation, has drawn global tech executives, political leaders and investors. In addition to Gates, figures such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, French President Emmanuel Macron, and CEOs from Google, OpenAI and other major AI companies have participated.
Late Withdrawal from Keynote Role
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation confirmed that Gates would not deliver his keynote address, saying the decision was made “to ensure the focus remains on the AI Summit’s key priorities”. The foundation did not provide further details on the reasons for the abrupt cancellation.
Gates’ decision to withdraw comes amid renewed scrutiny over released U.S. Department of Justice emails involving communications between Gates Foundation staff and the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, which has generated media attention in recent weeks. Gates has previously described his interactions with Epstein as limited and said his meetings were a mistake.
In Gates’ absence, a senior representative from the foundation, including its chief strategy officer, addressed the summit instead.
Summit’s Mixed Reception and Broader Context
Although the summit has secured more than US$200 billion in AI investment pledges, including major commitments by Indian conglomerates and global tech firms, the event has been marred by logistical and organisational issues. Reports from delegates describe traffic chaos, exhibition access problems and challenges for participating companies navigating the venue.
The cancellations, including another high-profile no-show by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, reportedly due to illness, have raised questions about India’s ability to host global mega-events of this scale.
Despite these setbacks, the summit continues its agenda of advancing international cooperation on AI, including discussions on responsible AI governance, child safety on digital platforms and voluntary commitments to frontier AI principles from global companies.
