ASEAN Urged to Strengthen Crisis Readiness as Middle East Spillover Tests Regional Resilience

Cebu, 7 May 2026 – ASEAN has been urged to strengthen crisis coordination and institutional preparedness as the spillover effects of the Middle East conflict place growing pressure on Southeast Asia’s energy security, supply chains and economic resilience.

The warning comes as ASEAN leaders gather in Cebu for the 48th ASEAN Summit, where energy security, food supply, regional resilience and crisis response are expected to be central issues. The summit is being held under the Philippines’ 2026 chairmanship theme, “Navigating Our Future, Together,” at a time when global instability is increasingly affecting trade routes, fuel costs and investor sentiment across Asia.
