Tokyo, 7 May 2026 – US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to visit Japan next week for high-level talks that will include the weak yen, placing currency stability back at the centre of economic discussions between Washington and Tokyo.
The visit is expected to run for three days and include meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda. The discussions are expected to focus on speculative selling of the yen, policy coordination and broader economic security matters, including rare earths and energy procurement.
