Malaysia Tightens Rules on Fully Imported EVs as Entry Bar Rises From July

Kuala Lumpur, 7 May 2026 – Malaysia will introduce tighter requirements for fully imported electric vehicles from 1 July 2026, raising the entry bar for completely built-up EVs as the country moves beyond the special exemption period that helped widen consumer access to imported electric models.

Under the revised framework, fully imported CBU EVs must meet two key conditions: a minimum cost, insurance and freight value of RM200,000 and a minimum motor power output of 180 kilowatts and above. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry said the conditions were communicated to franchise approved permit holders during an engagement session on 30 April 2026.
