Media Plays Crucial Role in Fostering Patriotism, Says Defence Minister

Kuala Lumpur, 11 March 2026 – Malaysia’s Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has emphasised the important role of the media in strengthening national resilience and cultivating patriotism among Malaysians, particularly in an increasingly complex global security environment.

Speaking at a Buka Puasa gathering with media practitioners, the minister commended journalists for their continued cooperation in reporting on defence and national security issues, noting that accurate and responsible reporting helps improve public understanding of national defence matters.

Mohamed Khaled said the media plays a significant role in shaping how Malaysians perceive security challenges and national unity. According to him, the press can help nurture patriotism, reinforce national identity and encourage solidarity among citizens in the face of potential threats.

He also stressed that safeguarding national security is not solely the responsibility of the armed forces. Instead, it requires the participation and awareness of all Malaysians. By communicating defence-related issues effectively, the media can help the public better understand their role in protecting the country.

The minister added that responsible journalism could also help counter misinformation and external propaganda that might threaten social harmony or create divisions within Malaysia’s multicultural society.

In addition, he noted that media coverage acknowledging the contributions and sacrifices of the Malaysian Armed Forces can boost morale among military personnel who serve to defend the nation.

Mohamed Khaled highlighted that a strong partnership between the Defence Ministry and the media is essential for building public awareness about national security and promoting a “whole-of-government and whole-of-society” approach to defence.

He pointed out that Malaysia, as a nation with limited resources, must rely on cooperation across all sectors of society to ensure its preparedness and security. Engagement between government institutions and the media therefore plays a key role in strengthening public understanding and national unity.

The event was also attended by Armed Forces Chief General Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman and senior military leaders, reflecting the close relationship between defence authorities and the media community.
