Meta Offers Rival AI Chatbots Limited Free WhatsApp Access as EU Antitrust Pressure Builds

BRUSSELS, 20 May 2026 – Meta Platforms has offered rival artificial intelligence chatbots limited free access to WhatsApp in Europe, as the company seeks to ease European Union antitrust concerns over whether it is unfairly favouring its own Meta AI assistant on one of the world’s largest messaging platforms.

The proposal would allow rival AI chatbot providers, including companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, to use WhatsApp’s business application programming interface without charge up to a certain usage limit. Once that threshold is exceeded, Meta would begin charging fees based on message volume, according to people familiar with the matter.
