KUALA LUMPUR, 09 October 2025 – That familiar cough, the sudden fever, and the deep muscle ache that makes getting out of bed a struggle, that’s a clear sign that the influenza, or flu, season has arrived in Malaysia.
While influenza viruses circulate here all year, officials have recently noted a distinct spike in cases, particularly within schools and other places where people gather closely.
According to The Rakyat Post, this increase is often seen around holiday periods when travel and social mixing are high. The current wave is mostly caused by the familiar Influenza A (H3) strain.
For most healthy people, the flu means a miserable week of being unwell. However, for others, like young children, older citizens, and those with ongoing health issues, the flu can be serious, sometimes leading to hospital stays.
Since we know the flu is spreading right now, the time to prepare is before the sickness knocks on your door.
Here are some essential steps to stay safe from the virus:
1. Get your flu vaccine: This is your best defense. The annual flu shot is designed to protect against the strains currently spreading. It helps your body fight off the virus, and even if you do catch the flu, the shot makes the illness much less severe.
2. Make handwashing a habit: The flu virus spreads easily when someone touches a surface with germs and then touches their own face. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
3. Mind your manners when cough or sneeze: Always cough or sneeze into a tissue. Throw the used tissue straight into the trash. If you don’t have a tissue, use the crook of your elbow, not your hand.
4. Stay home and rest: If you feel flu symptoms, like a sudden fever, body aches, or a bad cough, please do not go to work, school, or crowded places. Stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (and you haven’t taken medicine to lower it). Resting is the only way to recover and is vital to prevent infecting others.
5. Clean high-touch surfaces: Flu germs can live on objects for hours. Get into the habit of cleaning common surfaces at home and in the office, like door handles, light switches, and phones.
By taking these steps, you are not only protect yourself from several days of sickness but you also become part of the community effort to slow down the flu’s spread. Stay safe and healthy this season!
