KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia opened on a positive note today, with the benchmark index expected to challenge the 1,600 level, buoyed by Wall Street’s overnight rally on growing hopes of a US interest rate cut and robust corporate earnings.
At 9.15am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was up 2.48 points, or 0.16 per cent, at 1,589.08 compared to yesterday’s close of 1,586.60. The index opened slightly firmer at 1,586.91.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said Wall Street’s rally had propelled both the Nasdaq and S&P500 to record highs, while the US 10-year yield eased to 4.236 per cent. “Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index also broke past the 25,000 level as traders’ risk appetite grew on expectations of a US rate cut in September,” he told Bernama.
Thong added that with the FBM KLCI closing near the 1,590 level yesterday, he expects it to test 1,600 soon, which could lift overall trading volumes. “We anticipate sustained buying momentum, with the index likely to trade in the 1,580–1,600 range today,” he said.
