THAILAND: Three Thai soldiers were injured by a landmine explosion on Saturday while patrolling a border area near Cambodia, according to a statement from the Thai army. The incident occurred just days after Thailand and Cambodia reached a detailed ceasefire agreement following a five-day border conflict last month.
One soldier reportedly lost a foot, while two others sustained injuries when one of them triggered the landmine during a patrol between Thailand’s Sisaket province and Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province. All three are currently receiving medical treatment, the army said.
Thai authorities stated the explosion took place within Thai territory, in an area that had recently been cleared of landmines. The Thai foreign ministry announced plans to file a formal complaint against Cambodia, accusing it of violating the Ottawa Convention—which both nations have signed—and infringing on Thai sovereignty.
In response, Cambodia’s defence ministry said it had not yet received confirmation from its frontline forces about the incident, but maintained that its military was fully committed to upholding the ceasefire. The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority also rejected Thailand’s accusation that new landmines had been planted by Cambodian forces.
