Luxon Rules Out Grand Coalition With Labour as New Zealand Election Battle Sharpens

Wellington, 11 May 2026 – New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has ruled out forming a grand coalition with the opposition Labour Party after the country’s general election, sharpening the political battle ahead of the 7 November 2026 vote.

Luxon’s National Party currently leads a centre-right coalition government with ACT and New Zealand First. The idea of a grand coalition between National and Labour had gained attention among some political commentators as a way to avoid heavier reliance on smaller coalition partners under New Zealand’s mixed-member proportional electoral system. However, Luxon has rejected that option, making clear that National intends to campaign and govern on its own political mandate rather than pursue a broad governing arrangement with Labour.
