South Korean Won Slides Toward 2009 Low as Foreign Funds Sell Stocks

Seoul, 1 July 2026 – The South Korean won is sliding toward its weakest level since the global financial crisis, as foreign investors continue to sell local equities and pressure builds ahead of a landmark shift to near round-the-clock currency trading.

The won recently weakened to 1,549.4 against the US dollar, marking its weakest level since March 2009. The currency also briefly touched 1,550.2 during intraday trading, highlighting the scale of pressure facing one of Asia’s most important export-led economies.
