Petaling Jaya, 17 September 2026 – A call to incentivise solar companies has brought the affordability of household installations into Malaysia’s energy debate, with Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh arguing that stronger competition could lower costs and widen access. His proposal focuses on expanding installation services rather than announcing a new subsidy, making the distinction between political advocacy and implemented policy important for consumers and investors.
Akmal, who is also the Merlimau assemblyman, linked more affordable rooftop systems to reduced household dependence on grid electricity. He argued that wider adoption could also ease the government’s longer-term fuel-assistance burden. These are the objectives of his proposal, not quantified savings established by a cost-benefit assessment. No installation-cost reduction, funding allocation or implementation timetable was confirmed in the reported call.
