Beijing, 7 October 2026 – President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Washington stabilised the world’s most consequential economic relationship but delivered fewer concrete gains than Beijing sought, leaving investors with a renewed trade truce and more high-level meetings rather than a decisive settlement of technology, market-access and security disputes.
The visit was Xi’s first US state visit since 2015. Its visible achievement was continuity: the two governments preserved a temporary economic understanding and signalled further meetings before year-end. The truce, previously due to lapse in November, has been extended into January 2027, reducing the immediate risk of a new tariff escalation.
