Brussels, 7 October 2026 – The European Union is intensifying pressure on China to produce measurable progress on trade imbalances, market access and critical-mineral restrictions, with the bloc’s goods deficit now exceeding €1 billion a day. The talks arrive as European leaders prepare to review their economic relationship with Beijing and consider whether dialogue is delivering enough commercial reciprocity.
EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič is scheduled to meet Chinese officials in Beijing on 8 and 9 October. The agenda includes access for European companies, industrial overcapacity and controls affecting rare earths and related technologies. Brussels has said it wants tangible results by October, raising the political cost of another round of discussions that produces broad commitments but few operational changes.
